The Warner's invited our girls to go hiking with them up Big Cottonwood Canyon on Saturday. I had headed out for a run earlier and when I got back they were just getting ready to head out. Caely had been sick a few days before so she wasn't up to going, so it was just Alexa. I was feeling bad that I didn't plan better so I could go with them, but Krissy was so sweet and offered to wait while I changed my clothes and packed a lunch so I could join them.
We drove up the familiar canyon and found a great spot to park. Looking at the paved path I thought the 2.5 mile hike was going to be an easy one. It was not. The path turned to trail quickly and the rocks and terrain were more rough than I have been on in a long time.
Megan hurt her knee about half mile into the hike, so Ashley and I kept going with Amber and Alexa while Krissy took care of Megan. After another 1/2 mile, the little girls turned around to find Krissy. We thought they would have caught us by the end but we hadn't seen them. The hike turned into a 3 mile hike up hill and about a quarter mile to the lake I heard Alexa yell out for me. It was awesome! I sent Ashley on and I went back for the girls. Krissy was with them and Megan had headed back, her knee was pretty banged up.
Alexa was almost in tears. The hike was hard, it was HOT and she was miserable. Her new shoes were torn and they were both filthy. When we got to the lake, everyone was saying how amazing it was and that it was totally worth it. It's amazing how that pertains to a lot of things in life. Things can be really hard at first but in the end they're totally worth it.
The hike down was just as hard as the hike up. The rocks were loose and slick, we had to watch our feet most the whole time to not step on anything sharp. I tripped A LOT!
Our legs were sore and fatigued, but we still were so glad to have done something so hard. We ended up going 6 miles round trip. Alexa amazes me. She can do hard things! I loved spending the day with her and seeing her for the strong person she is.
After heading down the canyon, we of course had to stop at the infamous 7-11 at the mouth of the canyon for Slurpee's. We really needed something to cool us down from our hot hike. Plus, we'd earned it!
Thanks Krissy for a day to remember! Let's do it again soon.
