The Real World

The 5th grade kids at our school have been preparing to be grown-ups for the last month.

They learned how to balance a check book. They applied for jobs, interviewed and were assigned jobs and had a little training for their field trip to JA City.

On Tuesday I got to go with them and help them in the grown-up world.

They received pay checks and they were payed according to their job and level of hierarchy. They had to open savings accounts and checking accounts. They carried cash and got to spend, or save, what they earned.

Tyler was assigned CEO of Qwest. He had to make sure everything ran smoothly, everyone received service, pay bills and pay back their companies loan.

He also had to give a speech at the town meeting.

The kids had rotating break schedules when they could go spend their money. They could buy flash lights, hats, request songs, soda's, candy, pencils, and other things I can't remember.

It was a really cool experience. They play is amazing, it looks like a real town and every one has to contribute, just like a real citizen, for things to run smoothly.

I think all the kids were a little stressed out at their jobs, they all wanted a little more money to buy extra stuff, and they all ran out of time to complete it all

.....just like the real world!

Drew absolutely loved that field trip! So cool because now they know why we have to say no or why we can do fun things.. sometimes!
